Way better than Disney:

  1. Is that Franc C Papé? Looks like the illustrations for James Branch Cabell.

  2. Hi Karen,

These are by Robert Lawson. I don't know, but I would think he is English (this is from the first edition, and White was relatively unknown in the US).

I need to pick your brain or rather beg a favor- will email.

  3. Oo, Robert Lawson, author and illustrator of FERDINAND! (A very instructive book.)

  4. Erp, looks like he only illustrated FERDINAND.

  5. Bill Peet was still a great illustrator and animator. You can tell that his Kentuckiana roots played a big role in how he drew those Medieval English forests.

  6. I agree the Disney movie was awful. In fact all of the original fairy tales are better then most of the Disney movies.

  7. I've heard Bill Peet's vision for THE JUNGLE BOOK was more mystical, serious and, um, better, than the final product. I wouldn't be surprised if his original ideas for SWORD were better too.
