  2. I must shamefacedly confess that I had somehow missed this tidbit from Burton, but it is both insightful and typical of the great Victorian polymath.

  3. I wish I had more detailed provenance, Jim. It was in one of my old commonplace books that I occasionally mine for quotes.A possibility is the Lovell bio, which came out that year.
