And they malfunction--I have seen them get stuck on the shock mode, and zap dogs continuously until the wretched dog is writhing and screaming on the ground, and the collars have to be jerked off to stop it! And as for the shock simply being like "static from your carpet"? Static from your carpet doesn't have increasingly more painful levels, and many people like to test the collars on themselves, and they are PAINFUL! To me, shock collars are NOT good for basic training, and if you require one to get basic behaviours, you shouldn't be training dogs. I have known people who use them to get their dog to "sit" for Christ's sake! Why would anyone want to make training so unpleasant? I think the appeal is to people who like fiddling with gadgets, not training animals. I would only use one IF nothing else was working, and the consequences of not obeying could be the death of the dog.
