"Stuff is eaten by dogs, broken by family and friends, sanded down by the wind, frozen by the mountains, lost by the prairie, burnt off by the sun, washed away by the rain. So you are left with dogs, family, friends, sun, rain, wind, prairie and mountains. What more do you want?"

Two if by Sewall
A couple new essays to share from our friend Jake Sewall: the first a pondering of our humble origins and the second a strategic view from the rooftop lofts.

Did you ever notice that pigeon breeders in movies are a little . . . odd?
Think of Forest Whitaker's hit man character in "Ghost Dog". Or Will Ferrell's unreconstructed Nazi in the 2005 version of "The Producers".
Neither of them is exactly "mainstream."
So what are pigeons in American cinematic mythology?
But what about Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront? Or Jimmy Smits in NYPD Blue? (He also narrates a good pigeon documentary).
So, Steve, it's an obvious essay for you to write: Cinematic pigeons (but not in the film noir sense).
