"Stuff is eaten by dogs, broken by family and friends, sanded down by the wind, frozen by the mountains, lost by the prairie, burnt off by the sun, washed away by the rain. So you are left with dogs, family, friends, sun, rain, wind, prairie and mountains. What more do you want?" Federico Calboli

Post-Card From Above
Rebecca O'Connor's essay "Post-card From Above" was in today's issue of West, the LA Times Sunday magazine. It gives her perspective as a falconer on the expansion of suburban development in the area of Southern California where she lives. Also take a look at West's editor, Rick Wartzman's, comments on Rebecca's work. Congratulations, Rebecca!

Such a great piece. I wonder how it will strike some urban environmentalists, who share Rebecca's sprawl concerns but maybe not her worries about the future of duck hunting?
California is so often at the leading edge of American social movements, most of them troubling in my opinion. Hunters represent an obvious (but underappreciated) ally in the fight against sprawl and other environmental ntal ills.
Is it possible that the publication of Rebecca's article in the LAT indicates early recognition of this joint potential? If so, it would be one California-born fad I support. :-)
