Seriously,if he'd been hacking up ailanthus in the 'hood, no charges, no story. Those were some seriously expensive trees he killed. It was the value of the destroyed property that has caused a world o' hurt to come down on this guy. No different than if he'd been sawing off people's roof peaks to "improve" his view
