Guns, Freedom, threats to...

According to David at Never Yet Melted the last elections had one mighty ironic effect:

"Americans responded to the election of a democrat-dominated federal government by buying enough guns in 3 months to outfit the entire Chinese and Indian Armies. We also bought 1,529,635,000 rounds of ammunition in the month of December 2008 alone."

That's one healthy part of the economy.

Meanwhile a boneheaded Republican from New York has introduced a bill that could take your guns away for-- well, hardly any legal justification at all.

"A new gun law being considered in Congress, if aligned with Department of Homeland Security memos labeling everyday Americans as potential "threats," could potentially deny firearms to pro-lifers, gun-rights advocates, tax protesters, animal rights activists, and a host of others – any already on the expansive DHS watch list for potential "extremism."

"Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., has sponsored H.R. 2159, the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009, which permits the attorney general to deny transfer of a firearm to any "known or suspected dangerous terrorist." The bill requires only that the potential firearm transferee is "appropriately suspected" of preparing for a terrorist act and that the attorney general "has a reasonable belief" that the gun might be used in connection with terrorism."

I am beginning to think that the present House of Representatives is more of a threat to liberty than any terrorists.

Well if it works as well as the "no fly" list, I'm doomed. With a very common name I'm often unable to check in at the automated kiosks or early over the internet when flying. Ya'll should feel safe, though. They check my driver's license to make sure the date of birth isn't the same as the one for the guy who's not supposed to be flying.

As to the guns & ammo run, I spoke to a friend today trying to buy 45 auto- last weekend he hit every independent sporting goods place in town as well as a couple of different Wal-marts without finding a box.

I have to admit I bought a LOT of .45, .22, .303 British, and .30-30 ammo last summer. I already have a ridiculous amount of shotgun ammo.

Sometimes it helps to have an odd name (;-)

Good foresight. I had quite a bit of pistol stuff on hand, but have gone through a good bit of it. I wish I had stocked up 2 years ago. I didn't buy much last year because of the price increases. Given the supply and demand situation, I'll bet the high prices are going to be here for a while.

You called that correctly, Steve. Add Homeland Security, BATF, and about a zillion lobbyists of various stripes, than include various state governments, and you will be getting closer to the whole truth.

As for the ammo 'scare', I was at a major gun show in Reno about a month ago, and people were paying insane prices for all types of ammo. I reload for my bird guns, so I didn't find a reason to participate in the frenzy -- but there were people 4 deep around all the tables, and limits on the number of rounds a buy could purchase.
