Ruffed grouse and woodcock, in the oven as well as in the field, or rather woods. We have no substitute for the second west of the Mississippi...
Photo by Tim Gallagher, on opening day-- really near Ithaca NY but I bet it smells and feels the same...

Bird hunting is my favorite hunting. Ruffed grouse, ptarmigan and snipe here in Newfoundland. No woodcock here either. I love the dog work. I get more benefit out of big game hunting though, as my family really appreciates the moose/caribou meat. By the way I picked up a Russian SKS. I couldn't be more pleased
regards
Dan
sorry terrible spelling first post
I'm no bird hunter but I really miss the eastern woods I grew up in, too. Flocks of migrating birds often took up raucous residence in the trees for several days in October, and of course the changing leaves made for an amazing show. I love autumn here, of course, but those forests back east... *sigh.*
Anna-- fall is best EVERYWHERE but there is something special about the look and smell of falling red and golden leaves-- bird hunting is just a part of it. (BTW our email is "ebodio- at- gilanet- dot- com" -- bot prof written that way- or else just stick your head in!)
Dan-- I mildly envy you the Russian-- stocks at least better than my good Yugo. Let me highly recommend the snap- in apertures another regular here pointed me to, available here (the spring in the base of the original was so strong it took us two people to snap it out and put the new one in-- be warned!)
