Money, Writing For...

What is it Dr Johnson said? Tom McIntyre wrote this week, in a note:

"Money, money, money, yes. It may not be able to buy you happiness but poverty sure as hell can't either. I would just like to have the time (which means the money) to write only what I want, not what I must, or rather only what I must because it is the "I" and no other concern making me do so."

Yup.

A fellow I know did some good work and made a lot of money -- enough to buy three or four homes and his own plane. I asked him if money made you happy. His honest answer: No.... but it makes you *calmer*! That sounded like truth to me.

From our Utah guidehouse quoteboard:

Customer: "The only thing money can buy is pleasure."

Guide: "I sure do like that, though!"

Wealth is certainly not guaranteed to generate happiness, but I have not observed that poverty generates consistent virtue either. And money provides a lot of opportunity to an already happy person.

I once heard that money can't buy happiness, but it can make being miserable a lot easier to take.
