Tidbit

Hawk is learning fast. He actually JUMPED to me after this pic-- with his weight completely un- reduced!

Has anyone any name ideas? Somehow it has always been difficult for me to name birds...

The Japanese call the Harris' Hawk the "Red Thigh Buzzard" ... Momoakanosuri. "Momo" isn't a bad name, meaning thigh or peach. Akai is red. Nosuri might get confused for constant denial in certain parts. Is that a Harris? No siree. But you could be cheeky and name it Nosuri Bob. Bob is an excellent name.

I've always thought that Fang was a good name for a bird. My brother used to have a parakeet named Fang.

Sigurd is a nice name.

He looks very much like a Viking hero.

In hawk form.

I like the Spanish names. They sound neat. I have had several Harris' hawks with Spanish names. Zorro, Cortez, Mercedes, Gomez, Tobasco, etc.

Bomber as in 'Bomber Harris' - guaranteed total war.

Hey Steve,
Nice bird, what about Montague, after Montague Stevens? A legendary hunter of the Gila region. You could call him Monty.

A great bunch of ideas! Right now I lean toward Border wars, or Paul's Monty. Paul-- do you know that the Stevens PB was printed from my copy?!

No, I didn't know that Steve. I do remember a post here about the book though...

My birds either get an name or their freedom at the end of their first year. I can't tell you how many Birds I have had, not so many named ones though. All mine have been passage though.

I always thought Sword and Magic Helmet would be good names for a pair of Harris' hawks. (From "What's Opera, Doc" in which Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny reprise Wagner. Yes, kill da wabbit.) But all the Harris' hawkers I'm in touch with on a regular basis fly them singly...

There's always Boba Fett. ...He WAS the original clone, you know...

Steve I think a male Harris should have a 1-2 syllable name, preferably ending in "y" or "ie."

However, two of my best had other endings and another had 4 syllables, so maybe I'm wrong about this!

That would be a pretty awesome coincidence if your hawk shared the same name as our oldest vizsla. We chose his name because of a Bulgarian friend -- Momo being the familiar version of Momchil. The most famous of those is celebrated as a general against the Turks in the 14thC.

Have to admit that I am a fan of 'Bomber,' too.

A couple of my friends, father and son, never name their birds. However, when asked, they always say Peaches!

And next year, get another male for him to fly with. You will have a blast. Get a t post and you will have a pair of 'hit men'. As a falconry friend called his pair of male HH's he flew.

Aha! You did go for a HH! So much fun for you! Nice feet on him. And yes, HHs want to be around you because they *like* you.

I named my first THH Muad'dib, the "jumping mouse" from Dune, which eventually degenerated into Squeaky. My second was named by various owners Harry (real original there), then Red Butler, and I named him Polya (short for Napoleon, who he resembled). Had a TRT named Fluffy, who was no pussy when it came to jackrabbits. My female gos I named Malkah (queen in Yiddish; king is Melekh).

I like Momo but it makes me think of car accessories :)
