Picture taken from the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. That's right up there with those videos of flying tractor trailers taking during the Dallas tornado a few days ago.
"He taught him horsemanship, archery and how to wield lasso, rein and stirrup, and what and when and how, the rites of of convivial society, of formal ceremony and the symposium; hawking, falconry and how to hunt with the cheetah; what was justice or the lack of it; what the throne and the crown meant; how to deliver orations and how to go to war and lead an army."

That's NOT a Martian tornado; that's Woola out for a run!(if you don't get this, then you are obviously not an ERB-John Carter fan...)
I'm sure that would have been Mr. Burroughs interpretation. I went through all of his Martian books back when I was in junior high
Did you see the new movie?(still in theatres NOW, I believe....) Made about the first novel(of course) "A Princess Of Mars"--which title the PR peeps said would NEVER work, so they just called it simply "John Carter"--I HIGHLY recommend it--quite a visual spectacle on the big screen!!! And by gosh, they really actually followed Burrough's original story and characters very well! My favorites were always the giant, green, multi-limbed, tusked THARKS, as well as their beasts, the doglike Calots, and the thoats. They couldn't have portrayed them better than they did in this movie! And they really did Woola, the calot, wonderfully!
I have not seen it but it sounds like I should. Actually should re-read some of the books it's been so long
