Weekend Links

... good, bad, & strange. Bear with my light blogging for a couple more weeks please! First, good:

Tazi pix! Right from the source, Almaty & environs-- the bearded ethnic Russian guy is Konstantin Plakhov, who bred our Ataika, seen here as a pup at Kostya's there and as a matron, here, below.

Libby with Kostya and Zhendet the tobet, in 2004:
Very Bad: you are not paranoid when they are after you. I particularly like this quote: "“They can get rid of hounding and deal with a segment of their community that is not well respected. Or they can potentially lose all bear and bobcat hunting.” Us. The oldest Paleolithic partnership. "First they came.." Fill in your favorite. Are you listening David Peterson? Think they'll keep bowhunting?

Weird but probably true paleo- science. A bad time for megafauna! HT Walter H.

I am discouraged, by not surprised, at the turn of events with the hounding bill.

Isn't that gray-muzzled dog in the top photo over twenty years old?

Only fourteen in the photo I think; she lived to be twenty. Taik is nine and but for a little gray looks half that, and is as energetic as a young dog.

Question for Steve, as I don't know how to contact you directly:
Is there a tradition of scent hounds in Mongolia or Central Asia that you know of? I'm a wildlife biologist, and a friend is launching some wolverine research in Mongolia. She's looking into the feasibility of using a scat detection dog, and would like to see about building that capacity in Mongolia (she's fluent in Mongolian.) Any thoughts from your knowledge of working dogs in the region very much appreciated. All best, Christine Paige, chrispaige at gmail.com

Pertaining to the Humaniacs trying to outlaw hunting with hounds(most people are referring to scenthounds in this regard, of course)--I personally am something of a weenie when it comes to killing critters(I only tend to do it if I HAVE to to eat, or maybe put a mortally wounded or ailing critter out of it's misery), and yet I have always loved hunting with scenthounds(as well as many other canine-types), and one reason is you virtually never have to kill anything if you don't want too! I have known many fox and coon hunters that rarely or never(outside of the occaisional mishap if the dogs actually catch up to the quarry that doesn't tree or go to ground for some reason--but this is RARE) kill anything--they are just out there to listen to some good hound music! I have learned A LOT about wildlife running critters with hounds, and continue to learn, allowing them to run another day. The humaniacs wanting to ELIMINATE hunting with hounds FOREVER, have a very skewed and unrealistic view of this outdoor activity. I ain't sayin' some don't abuse it--I wish, for instance more bear hunters would not feel the need to shoot EVERY bear they tree(my experiences have been that bear hunters I've known virtually NEVER let the bear go--not to say there aren't exceptions there, either), but even with the "shoot-everything-treed" types, they still have less negative impact on wildlife than the consumerists' urban lifestyles of the typical humaniacs I've met.....
