"Stuff is eaten by dogs, broken by family and friends, sanded down by the wind, frozen by the mountains, lost by the prairie, burnt off by the sun, washed away by the rain. So you are left with dogs, family, friends, sun, rain, wind, prairie and mountains. What more do you want?"

A face for Lane...
It is dated-- from the 90's-- and he informs me he rarely wears a hat. But this is the best photo I have of Lane Batot and one of his many dogs, on a drizzly day atop one of his backyard mountains...

If Mr. Batot has no computer and lives out of town, how does he manage to frequently comment?
I dream of dropping mine off the higher of the harbour bridges.
Yes, my only access to a computer is at work--at a state-run zoo. I was forced, kicking-and-screaming, to learn how to use one for work reports, Email, etc. a few years back. When I finally discovered that it was like this humongo, amazing encyclopedia where I could look up ANYTHING, I quickly adapted enough to where I can waste as much time on a computer as any state employee now! But no such contraption in my house. Nor a cell phone--the last living human to not have one of those, I believe. And not very good T. V. reception, either--certainly can't afford cable T. V.! When I lived where this photo was taken, I got ZERO T. V. reception--not even radio reception, for 20 years or so! So I do pass for somewhat primitive in the U. S. in this day and time......L.B.
"l.b." there are two of us who are the only remaining without a cell phone. but i'm likely the only male left on planet earth that ain't tatooed or pierced!
...well, I shore ain't payin' anybody any money to scrawl all over my carcass, either, nor punch holes in me! I do have some holes, but they most certainly were NOT aquired purposefully, and the critters, tree branches, barbed wire, briars, rocks, and broken glass responsible all did them for FREE! No bulletholes, but there have been a few close calls there! Nice to know that SOMEONE else doesn't have a cell phone. But we are a severely endangered subspecies....L.B.
While I do have a mobile/cell phone it frequently lies in the bottom of draw with no charge in it, the only time I make a real effort to carry it is when I know there is someone going to try to contact me like Lauren in the last couple of weeks, otherwise I'd be near impossible to track down.
One recent piece of technology which I am loving my Garmin Astro 320, it's a GPS Unit with Dog tracking capabilities. I'm not so fast in the hunt as I used to be and the GPS makes allowances for this, not to mention the statistics on movement patterns, distance and average speeds etc which it logs.
I do however have one tattoo, a stylized version of the the word 'Saluki' in Arabic on the inside of my forearm. My only 'piercing' are those freebies you mentioned which are given out my nature whilst out hunting etc, lol of which I have had plenty over the years especially so when Ferreting.
Hey, Mark McBride--yer gonna HAVE to do a guest post on FERRETING sometime! I'm a big ferret afficiondo--I have 4 of them weasels--and though we don't have proper European rabbits to hunt with them where I live(or much of anything else--although apparently further North where they get more snow, one can track cottontail rabbits to burrows they utilize for shelter--usually groundhog/marmot dens--they are not warren diggers like Euro bunnies--and you can then bolt them with ferrets--Steve can inform you better on THAT!) And I have NO DESIRE to hunt rats with them, due to all the risks--I'll just enjoy reading Plummer's books about that! Gawd, how I LOVE D. Brian Plummer's books!(may he be ferreting/terrierrizing/lurchering in heaven as we speak....)....L.B.
Hey Mark, I just received my own Garmin 320 recently and am really liking it. It's really convenient to be able to look at the unit and know exactly where your dogs are. It takes a lot of the worry out of turning your dogs loose. The only drawback I see so far is that I spend a lot of timing looking at the unit while I'm walking, instead of paying attention to nature and the other nocturnal sounds of the evening. I believe work computer at the zoo-- but he can tell you better(;-))
I have come to accept the damn things-- have met too many friends and gotten too much info not to. Which doesn't mean i don't have the same impulse!
