Far Away and Long Ago

Me "teaching" at Wildbranch Writing Workshop, Sterling College, in Craftsbury Common, Vermont; 1990- what? Dark(ish) hair anyway! Janisse Ray (right of me, black vest) and Kansas poet H C Palmer (balding head toward camera) needed little but encouragement...

Steve I think you know: Janise and I used to work together at Florida Fish and Game. She was in the information / media division when I was in nongame. I've enjoyed her books and recommend them to anyone. I don't think we ever talked about you, but that was before you and I met. She certainly saw plenty of trained hawks there: one falconer worked in her office, and three more of us worked upstairs. :-). Nice to work in a place where you could hear hawks bells ringing down the hallway.

Why am I not surprised?

Her live recital of her poems is mesmerizing. We used to call her "the Swamp Witch" (as a compliment )

I remember that week. I was over in Joel Vance's group, but you looked at story of mine and suggested I send it to Gray's. I did. It appeared a year or so later. That was a great week. I do recall Janisse's poety reading.
