Quote

"... as soon as I went in the door I immediately recalled how great an experience a good bookstore was, to which the browsing we do on computers is as phone sex compared to sex."-- Michael Gruber

Ditto that. And I will use it freely...

Reading ebooks on the PC is tough on me. My eyes simply do not have the stamina. I am hoping to purchase, at some point, one of those book simulator thingies (a Tinder? A Niche? Whatever they're called) to alleviate this problem.

Nathaniel:

I got a Nook and I like it OK, especially for the plethora of free digitized vintage books like Frederick Courteney Selous.

Kindle has more content available.

I got a leather cover so it feels like I'm reading a 'real' book.

Think also of the loss of the public and university libraries - the steady reduction of the hard copy holdings - everything from the daily newspapers from around the world, to monthly periodicals and scholarly journals, archived and bound for posterity ... to all the volumes and volumes of writing, fiction and non-fiction which constitute our historical heritage and research sources; priceless gems of primary research, tucked away in the stacks for decades, many obscure gems more easily accessed by the process of browsing than by any system of computerized data search ... one supposes it has to happen, as the increasing weight and mass pose strain to existing physical storage facilities. One wonders how much more limited our access and comprehension of the past will become ... glad I won't be around to deal with the consequences.

....And when society collapses, and computer skills and access are no more, WHO are the people of the world gonna turn to? Yeah, they're gonna come to ME(and all the book eccentric lovers and collectors out there still carrying on) who always knew a REAL BOOK was superior to this ephemeral will-o-the-wisp world of computers that could be GONE in an INSTANT! My analogy--like having to train/care for a computer concept dog(or other pet--and YES, there are such programs out there!) versus having the real thing! Just INSANE(and very, very pitiful)......L. B.
