Panhandle Eagle

The week before Christmas, I was driving home from Arkansas when I was surprised to see this Bald Eagle about 10 miles north of Dalhart, Texas.  He was sitting in a cottonwood about 40 yards off of US   87 watching the traffic roll by.

I assumed this was a "he" as he seemed sort of smallish to me.

we have a nesting pair of bald eagles in the valley of the sun (phoenix az area). they have a residential nest on the salt river pima/Maricopa indian res. somewhat less developed than the rest of this gentrified area, but still amazing that they have taken up residency in such a bustling area. less than a mile from the casino......the tribe has prohibition signs well posted so they apparently get by without too much interference .....

bald eagles are sure opportunistic as we have a residential nesting pair right smack dab in the middle of the valley of the sun (phoenix) Arizona! they are nesting in an old relic cottonwood tree on the salt river pima/Maricopa indian res. altho this part of the valley is less developed (and certainly not gentrified) there's still a lot of traffic and noise. the area is posted by the tribe to discourage pestering......

We had a Baldie show up just a coupla days ago near one of our lakes here at the Zoo where I work--I just missed seeing it! I had seen one some years ago fishing in the same lake. Though he/she wasn't actually after the many Canada Geese there at the time, the geese were panicking and diving every time to eagle made a pass! Bald eagles have actually made a great comeback in North Carolina(where I live)too, and can be found on most large lakes now, all across the state, and especially all along the coastal areas. I've always wondered--any history on anyone hunting or FISHING using a Baldie? I know since they were declared an endangered species they were taboo for private ownership, but perhaps in the distant past? The only account I've ever read of a captive Baldie was the famous one about "Old Abe" kept as a yankee mascot during the Civil War.....L.B.

Canadian hoodmaker Ken Hooke flew a male at jackrabbits some years back.

Fishing would be difficult; "carrying" is a vice!
