Motto

It was "Isaak Dinesen's" as well as one that was quoted a bit in many venues in the 70's. Can't fault it:

Navigare necesse est;  vivere non est necesse...

From Plutarch , if a borrowing; even then;  also recently attributed to everyone up to William Burroughs, who did not say it first-- though he used it in favor of exploring Space!...

Ah, yes, the late 15th C translation by Antonius Tudertinus. (Old scholars never die, they just keep pecking away. Wuffle, wuffle.)

But the point of it?

My take is this: When the burdens are heavy and the spirit wanes, it's time to set sail with family and friends, literature and music, hounds and hawks, and other joys. Even if you cannot perform all things well, there's merit in the quest.

Ahhhh, yes, we are all nomads at heart. That is why modern urban humans still MUST have substitutes for their ancient genetic hunter-gatherer/warrior instincts--shopping, mall walking, organized sports of some sort, vacations abroad. I am MOST thankful I am financially too poor to afford any of them, but incredibly wealthy in that I live in an environment that still allows me a far better "outlet" for these desires and urges than ANYTHING offered by the modern world and technology. And I think I am much more content because of this.....L.B.
