A Few Thoughts on Politics

What is it with people this year? I never could get that passionate about electoral politics. Or dream of distorting facts to bolster my candidate.

Have you seen Naomi Wolfe on how "Evita" Palan is the stalking horse for the new fascism, how this will be the last election of our lifetime, and how she & McCain are going to bring in Iraqi troops to patrol our cities? (That if they did it would be a good thing to have an armed populace is not likely to penetrate her tinfoil hat.)

She also thinks that Cheney or Halliburton or something is opening her mail, and STEALING HER KIDS' REPORT CARDS!

Reminds me of a time several years ago when I was having drinks with an old North Dakota cowboy in the bar. This mad German women who had come to town to see UFO's (don't ask) was ranting about various conspiracies against her, winding up with "..and then the Vatican sent a hit team to kill my dog!"

Rink turned to me, spit in his spit cup, and said: "Steve, that lady's counterfeit. I don't know what no Vatican is but it didn't send no hit team after her dog."

Relax, folks, it's politics, not life.

And if the thought of either candidate winning scares you, recall the old anarchist joke: ""If God had meant us to vote, he would have given us candidates..."

I'm always astounded that anyone actually believes that any president won't succumb to all the exact same policy pressures that are in place. Okay, yes, little things change, but life as we know it will be exactly the same no matter who wins the election. Yet, my friends are practically getting into knife fights over this election. I won't even watch the news anymore. I prefer the Saturday Night Live version of the election...can't we just laugh at everyone?

I just gave a copy of Cannery Row to an investment banker I know.

Regardless who becomes President, I think we'll all need a guidebook for how to live in an "under-capitalized community."

Oh, I'm pretty amused by the whole thing. There's lot of laughing going on among people I know, but I think it's more the better-laugh-than-cry type of laughter. I asked a co-worker what she thought of teh state of affairs a few days after the conventions were over. She said, "Oh, the telenovela?" I think that's the best one-word description I've heard so far. I mean, if you tried to write this whole election plot-line, with all it's characters, twists and subplots, into anything, no one would ever think it was believable! Pass the popcorn!

This kind of level-headed sanity will get you nowhere.

This coming from extraterrestrial sources via the filling in my back left molar: The magical thinking is great, earthlings. Keep doing that. Whether you posit Papal designs on your dogs, or that the President has an effect on markets-it's all good to us. We understand that Ms. Palin speaks in tongues; we are big fans of political trance, so please follow up on that. Now if only Jeremiah Wright would take up serpents...
