More Links

Despite some recent data from Africa, it seems that southeast China still looks to be the most likely point of dog origin. But they might have eaten them at first, as some people there do today. HT Reid.

They are looking for the Mongolian Death Worm again. I must say more people THERE believe in it than, say, British Columbians believe in Bigfoot.

Coursing with cheetahs is (accidentally) legal in England! And here is a very elegant steampunk cheetah for a rainy day. Check out his other creations too, especially the elephant. HT Sari Mantila.

A pitcher plant that eats rats!

The first traces of color have been found in Dinosaur- aged bird feathers-- dark and irridescent like a grackle's. HT Annie Hocker.

The daughter of Prince Kropotkin, the gentle Russian anarchist and amateur animal behaviorist, became a Goldwater Republican.

A GREAT blog I don't mention enough: Smartdogs.

And a promising new one, by "Nagrom" of Rum and Donuts: Armed Bohemian.

And finally a video link to what one might call the sublimity of predation: Sardine Run.

I met Stewart MacPherson (one of the discoverers of Nepenthes attenboroughii) a couple weeks ago at a cookout. My head just about essploded from excitement! Also - not as cute as a tapeworm - this botfly vid is making the rounds. Love this woman - she gets a little freaked, but is most interested in documenting the fun.

"If a Mongolian says they have seen a big worm-like creature out in the desert they haven't really got any reason to lie," he said.

Unless the Mongolian was having a bit of fun with a gullible Western academic.

But actually I agree this one is not implausible. It could be some sort of isolated population of cobra abandoned between ice ages. Certainly are stranger things around.

Do you think this is the root of that great Kevin Bacon flick Tremors?

Amnd where the heck is Darren when we need him?

Here we go again-- another gullible "researcher" buying into Ray Coppinger's nonsensical "theory" of dogs "domesticating themselves" despite NUMEROUS evidence that dogs/wolves were kept by hunter-gatherers LONG before permanent settlements--DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED!!! This is subject material for a long, ranting future post!....L.B.

Go for it, Lane. I do buy a lot of Saivolainen though, as to geography.

Ha! Let me get my trailhound stories finished up(2 or 3 more posts?), and I'll gladly tackle Mr. Coppinger's "theory"!!! It is high time that nonsense was put to rest!.....L.B.
