Wild cat!

Flipping through photos of this captive mountain lion, I laughed when I realized he really looked like a dangerous beast in this photo. I could use this as a stand-alone photo for dramatic effect, right? But the truth is this shot was taken at the peak of this tom's yawn, as you can see from the photos below, which show the action just before the dramatic photo.

Very cute.

But, as a dog trainer, my gut told me it was a yawn. The commisure and area around the eyes are soft, not tense.

But still - another great photo.

I used to think wildlife photogs were great stalkers and also very lucky.

Then I joined the Outdoor Writers Assn. of America (before it got weird) and went to their annual conference, which that year was in Kalispell.

I met several owners of such wildlife parks in Montana who were pitching their services to the photographers present.

One guy brought a half-grown mountain lion with him as a prop.

Live and learn.

It's always amusing to see photos of big cats in books and magazines showing them in the middle of a big yawn with a caption that reads something like: "The roar of the lion can be heard from miles away".
