Querencia Country Part 3: Mountains

We are nestled into the north end of the Magdalena range, and just a bit east of the parallel, longer, wetter San Mateos. Both stand over 10,000 feet high, giving us a variety of climate unknown in places with less variation in elevation. Though we are in an arid part of the country, interior valleys can look like New England or the Pacific Northwest.

The appearance of the high ridges and lower canyons is more "Southwestern". Let us ascend a canyon on the northeast wall of the Mags that overlooks Lee's ranch on the flats below and "points" toward Ladron, Ed Abbey's Thieves' Mountain, to the north. Looking up from below: there is a Peregrine eyrie in the left wall of the "notch" in the center (click and enlarge, on all).

Now we are on the ledge to the right side of the notch, slightly above the nest, looking down to the road where I took the first pic. Ladron is on the far horizon...

Snow lingers in the shade well into April, when this photo of Libby, holding the skull of a winter- killed bear, was taken.

The trail crosses steep scree slopes as we ascend past 9000 feet.

A long hike but we are almost out of the trees...

On top at last, the view is its own reward: summit just below South Baldy peak, about 10,500, looking west across plains to San Mateo range. Jackson and Lib- is the third person reading, or does anyone know who it is?

(Oh and- down on that plain, north and right of the San Mats? These, which deserve their own post...)

Wow! More fantastic shots! Thanks so much from all of us that #1, can never afford the petrol to visit ourselves, and, #2, will never be able to find anyone to take care of their menageries allowing them to make such a trip(even IF they COULD afford the petrol, which they can't, mainly because of said menageries). And WHOEVER that person in the next-to-last photo is, they dang well BETTER NOT be READING with such scenery--and anyone caught "texting' or on a cell phone in such an environment should be FLOGGED! And the last photo? Obviously where the AKC is meeting with the aliens......L.B.

Don't worry, nobody reading! Stranger left, Jack with camera stuff middle, Lib just leaning into wind right. Not only do we not DO that-- phones don't work there and we own no Blackberries,IPads etc. I don't even carry my phone except to the city (;-)

"The view from the top" is stunning and makes me wonder if it is possible to just park an RV there and ponder the next move.

The final pic: Is this so ET can phone home, or is the government listening for ETs on their own. If it is a landing strip for the Mother Ship, I want to know when the next departure is scheduled?

My black dogs would think they'd found their way back to the COO.

Mr. Bodio,
My name is Mike Franzak. I am sitting here at my desk with a signed copy of "On the Edge of Wild." My Aunt Ann gave it to me a few years ago and I read it last year and enjoyed it greatly. I took copious notes, for reasons which I shall explain, and am going through them again. I published my first book with Simon and Schuster two years ago, a memoir about my experiences in Afghanistan as a Harrier pilot. It's called a Nightmare's Prayer. I'd be happy to send you a copy (as you know the publisher gives you extras) if you are so inclined but I'm sure you have better things to do. The reason I'm contacting you is because I've been working the last 18 months on a novel. Currently am 2/3 complete. I didn't know this until the other day but I learned one of my characters after he fled Nuristan in 1998 to neighboring Pakistan became a tutor under his mentor in falconering. If possible I would like to ask you a few questions via email so that you might push me in the right direction for correct (better) research. I'm a fellow New Mexican now residing in Raleigh. My uncle, Keith Green, thought highly of you. Perhaps you knew him. He was editor of several newspapers in New Mexico. As he put it, "Bodio is a hell of writer." If you would be inclined to contact me, please email me at mikefranzak@yahoo.com All the best, Mike p.s. Eagle Dreams is waiting for me at the library. Just came in on inner library loan.
