TH White and Falconry

Courtesy of Jon D'Arpino and the Journal of the North American Falconers Association, with special thanks to Conor Jameson, The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Helen Macdonald for taking me there and of course Stacia Novy, who got me to write it.

Thank you for posting these articles. White is too little remembered or appreciated. "Didn't he write "Camelot?" a friend asked. Definitely not! I replied by quoting Noel Coward's critique: "Longer than 'Parsifal' and not half so funny". You might also point out the number of TH White fans who did NOT become falconers because of "The Goshawk". I was 13 when I first read it, but was mature enough to know I wanted nothing to do with such masochism. And since it was the only book about falconry around at the time, how was I to know otherwise? But I stuck with him as a writer.
