Pigeons of the Middle East..

.. and North Africa. Janet Jones, the archaeologist who was one of my companions on my Turkish Kurdistan trip in December, has been in Egypt, where she photographed these adobe dovecotes.

The dovecotes are the "beehives" on the roofs.

The birds I saw in Turkey, especially in and around the city of Urfa, fascinated me so much that I got back some descendants of a popular Middle Eastern breed, the "Msawwad" (black) dewlap, that I had years ago. (Mine were from Lebanon). These handsome birds fly for hours above eastern cities from Egypt to Kurdistan-- I saw them there-- and then dive vertically to their home lofts like falcons. I never quite got the knack of training them but I am going to try again.

Steve, I like your Dewlaps.Where did you get them from? I breed and fly Dewlaps, Lebanons, and Egyptain Swifts. I am looking some more Msawwads.

They are descended from Christian Otrajki's Lebanese birds. We only have a few, but if you have a different strain we could probably breed you some and trade.

I would be interested in your training methods.

Steve, sorry it took so long to get back to you. Christian was a good freind of mine. I got some of my Lebanons from him. My Dewlaps are Adana type from Turkey. We moved in Nov. and I lost many of my blacks. I am down to 2 pair. I hope to raise some this year and would trade with you.
I'll get some phots to you.

The Adana Dewlaps are the most fantastic nose-diver dewlaps in the world. I had them in Turkey and you can find a lot of the breeders and photos of the birds at: http://forum.guvercin.web.tr/viewforum.php? f=62&sid=b2c49716b905e2da3a24b98535dc7069

Else search TGYB Adanalar..click on their links for photos.

Steve, it's been a while...checking things out here on the Dewlaps and see some new post. Is that Duane T. from KY? My Adana bloodline came from him and he taught me a lot about them. There are many good websites out there from Turkey and Germany on Dewlaps, one needs to know alittle of the language. German I can get around but not Turkish. Its too bad they have a lot of info on them, and great pics.
Well I also started a website on Dewlaps, http://www.geocities.com/adanawammen/index.html
I am not an expert but I thought it was needed here in the states, also maybe get in contact with Dewlap breeders from around the world to share ideas. What do you think?

Bill-- that was Duane but I haven't heard back.

Enjoyed your site. Let me know your email!
