STILL another Mauser

Years ago, more flush and thinking that anyone who called himself ".275 Rigby" should have one, I gave Jonathan Hanson my Rigby 7 X 57 (on a Mauser 98 action).

Jonathan has done well with it, and I have never regretted it, but I have never, as has been documented here, found a 7 X 57 to match.

Until last Saturday when I went into Ron Peterson's gun store in Albuquerque with credit, intending to present a wish list including "best 7 x 57 I can afford."

My friend Travis Boggus, BEFORE I could present him with the list, came out of the back waving a prewar Obendorff Mauser, all original but for a Leupold scope, with express sights, barrel- band swivel, all the bells and whistles, original butt plate. But for the Germanic double set triggers and cheek piece, it is a CLONE of the Rigby.

I'm keeping this one.

Nice, Steve. A long time ago I read an article by John Jobson called "The Welterweight Rifle with the Heavyweight Punch", or something similar, about the 7x57, and I decided right then I had to have one. Well, I never did. But I guess there are a few out there to be had. Maybe someday.

I remember that article-- smiling bearded Jobson holding a little Mannlicher stocked version (we are dating ourselves!)

Any new interesting paintings? I'd be happy to put some up here with a link.

Very nice! Looks a lot like my dad's 7x57, the one that I sold to Tommy Mac for his son -- except it did not have a set trigger.

Steve, Jonathan showed me that rifle when I was visiting him and Roseann in Tucson. I was instantly jealous! Are are a generous guy in deed.

The Orbendorf is a classic Mauser. The only other one I would put in the same class is the G33/40 and VZ33 - my brother has one in .280 and it also makes me jealous. ;-)

Some day I'll stop spending my gun money on old shotguns and buy another rifle.

Go shooting...

Steve, yes a few in the works, one in particular of a golden eagle chasing a jackrabbit. I'll let you know when it's done and get an image to you somehow.
